LET'S TALK ABOUT... THE FAMILY
Let’s talk about.. The Family!!
Each family has a different system and structure. Different ways a family is made up and how they react through different situations.
My family is different from my roommate's family and their family is different from mine. When we get together as roommates we can see that we were all raised very differently and in different family structures. It is interesting to live with others and to try and implement all our different structures together. For example, when we are all trying to clean the apartment it is different from when cleaning or doing chores at home. Some of my roommates do not want to clean and throw their stuff around, other roommates are good at picking up for themselves.
At home we were always supposed to clean up after ourselves. If we didn’t pick up we would get in trouble. Living on my own with other people there are not established rules or roles. We have to establish our own rules and we each have different backgrounds of how a family should work.
In this Family Relations class I am taking we talk a lot about families and how they work. Recently in class we talked about Family Science and Research. I really loved learning about the different statics in a family and how families can still be structured without a mom or dad. In The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints we believe that families are ordained of God. There’s a quote that I really like, it says, “Parents have a sacred duty to rear their children in love and righteousness, to provide for their physical and spiritual needs, and to teach them to love and serve one another, observe the commandments of God, and be law-abiding citizens wherever they live. Husbands and wives—mothers and fathers—will be held accountable before God for the discharge of these obligations.”
I believe that parents do have a responsibility to provide for their children and that we are learning different things at home. We learned in class how different families have different structures and different types of families learn different things.
We learned in class that we all come from different backgrounds and different types of circumstances. Our childhood can shape the different ways that we act now and the things that we do. I feel like it’s important to grow from the things that we learn from our childhood. It seems like we have to be this certain way when we are growing up that you have this perspective of how you have to live and how you are.
In the reading that we had this week, we read about How Science Works, and How We Can Know What is True. We talked about how science works and what the scientific method consists of. It was very interesting to see how science and families relate so well together. I never knew that it would be this close but it is really eye opening to see how it works and how I can have a better family through the scientific method.
There’s a quote at the end of the reading that we had that I really liked that I want to add, “Most of us develop our beliefs and opinions without giving a great deal of thought to how we arrive at those conclusions. We seem to arrive at most of our beliefs without considering whether our methods were sound and consistent with our values. In fact it is not uncommon for people to change their values when a new belief or testimony does not align with their values. That can be both helpful and detrimental.”
